Book Review - Zodiac Academy: The Awakening

Image
3 stars     Tori and Darcy are twin sisters who just discovered their true bloodline. Fae. This means they're screwed since both only lived in the mortal realm and know nothing about The Zodiac Academy and their royal blood. They discover their hidden powers and have to fight to fit in the academy with four princes trying to force them back home.     My favorite character was Tori, she was so brave and grumpy! I wasn't expecting anything like that, I really liked Tori's romantic prospect and their dynamic. I liked the world build and the angst of the bullying, I liked the academy setting and the way they had real classes, it was pretty cool.     However, I didn't like Darcy's romantic prospect or her in general, she was way too kind in a world ready to swallow her whole. I didn't like the way they never had enough power to beat the boys and were just dragged around by everyone.      Overall I liked the book and I'm eager to begging the...

Book Review - The Ghost Bride

Image
3.5 stars     Li Lan is the daughter of a bankrupt family and because of it, she has few prospects for her future. But everything changes when the powerful Lim family proposes for her to be a ghost bride. Now Li Lan has to deal with mortal, immortal and dead beings while she tries to uncover the secrets of this wealthy household.     My favorite character was Er Lang, without a doubt, he was bold and quick to protect the main character when needed. I liked especially the scenes when Li Lan is between planes and I found this story very rich culturally. I liked to discover what and who was behind Lim's son's death, the interactions between the members of his family, and all the mischief of the ghosts in the other plane.     I didn't enjoy the pace of the story, it was very slow and hard to unfold particularly in the second part. Although Li Lan made some bad decisions during the novel, I still think she was very strong and determined through her m...

Book Review - Fallen

Image
4.5 stars     Maddox is a wealthy playboy, always in the eyes of society living in chaos and dragging everyone around into that. But there is more than meets the eye. On the other hand, Erin hates what Maddox represents and when her best friend is killed. Erin wants nothing more than making Maddox pay, and that's when everything goes downhill.     I was pleasantly surprised by this story,.I must confess I wasn't expecting anything from this book since it had so few reviews. Maddox was easy to like and polite with his parents I expected him to be rude or selfish but I was wrong. One of my favorite parts was when they were investigating the crimes and everything was unfolding. It was very well written and I kept deduce who the killer was. The romance was absolutely adorable. Maddox and Erin were meant to be, they make each other better were they lack, and see all the development and evolution of both characters was worth.     But I didn't like one thin...

Book Review - The Princess Bride

Image
4.5 stars         Buttercup lived all her life on a farm with her parents and the farm boy, until everything changes... She discovers she's beautiful and Westley is in love with her! In the meanwhile, The Prince is searching for a bride, he was told the most beautiful woman in his reign is in marrying age, so he has merry her! She agrees since her love (Westley, a.k.a the farm boy) went in search of a fortune. And then the adventure beggings! Without a doubt, Westley was my favorite character in all stories, I found him very interesting, funny, and brave. I loved all the fencing and fighting bad guys, finding good guys, and searching for poor Buttercup because they were so well written I was actually entertained (I don't really like when the characters have to find another one, I always find it boring).       I didn't like the ending, I know it's a satire of the original story but it ended in a kind of Cliffhanger. I'm not a real fan o...

Book Review - Coraline

Image
5 stars        Coraline just wanted to play outside but the rainy day didn't let her, so to avoid boredom she starts to explore her house, until she finds a strange door. Coraline is a famous book, and it has a special place in my heart because it was the first book I read in English! Coraline is an adorable little girl wanting to have fun in a dull world, I think everybody see a bit of themselves in her. The characters were odd, I liked them most of the time but I can't say I didn't find them a bit strange. I already knew what would happen because I saw the movie before reading the book. One of my favorite parts were the horror and dialogue with the Other Mother .     I love this book very much, but I still think the movie is better. So, I hope you go see the movie before the book because it is one of a kind.       I never thought I would like middle grade horror books but here I am, addicted to this new genre! That's it, bye!

Book Review - Battle Royale

Image
4 stars      Imagine going on a school field trip just to discover that you'll have to fight for your life, and only one person gets to survive this insanity. This is what's happening with Shuya, a junior high school boy sucked in a world of violent exploitation. So, I didn't have many favorite characters because there were many (42 to be exact, and mostly didn't get more than a feel lines of description). I kept thinking about who was going to die next and who was going to kill next. It was distressful in a good way, my favorite parts of the book were the fighting scenes - who were amazingly written. This story made me tense, I was always expecting the main character or his friends to die and the story kept me hooked until the end.     I found it extremely difficult to care about most of the characters because I knew they would die soon, so I couldn't bond with anyone.      The story is very violent and has a lot of bloodshed and deat...

Book Review - Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge

Image
4 stars     Bailey just got out of college, she doesn't have friends or a job. But everything changes when Zane, her childhood friend, and occasional hook-up in high school, introduces her to a new kind of bartending, her monsters turn out to be way more literal than she thought. Without a doubt, Bailey was my favorite character, she is witty, intelligent, and a bit confused about adulthood. All characters were very well written, I especially liked all the representation and different characters the book shows us.      I was hooked with this story to the beginning, it was such a cool concept with lots of plot twists. I did enjoy this story. Also, the fighting scenes were amazing, my heart was pounding while I read. This book made me laugh so hard, I loved the sense of humor of the author, one of the best! But I never promised you a rose garden, I had some issues with the romance and the love interest. I didn't like him, I didn't think he and Bailey w...
